Reuters reported via MiningWeekly that Chile's state-owned mining firm ENAMI said on Monday the country's lithium resources are now estimated to be 28% larger than earlier projections, driven by newly assessed reserves in the Antofagasta region's salt flats.
ENAMI's latest study shows lithium resources at the La Isla salt flat have surged 150% to 2.13 million tons, while the Aguilar salt flat holds close to 1 million tons, up 40% from prior projections.
The combined contribution from these two salt flats boosts Chile’s lithium resources by 3.05 million tons. Prior to this update, the USGS had pegged the country’s total lithium resources at 11 million tons.
USGS figures show Chile is the third-largest lithium resource country (trailing Bolivia and Argentina), the top in reserves (9.3 million tons), and the No. 2 lithium producer worldwide.
This May, ENAMI plans to partner with investors to exploit lithium deposits in the La Isla and Aguilar salt flats under the Salares Altoandinos initiative—a milestone as Chile’s inaugural lithium mining JV.
Several international players have submitted LOIs to ENAMI, signaling strong market interest in the venture.
