According to a Reuters report cited by Mining Weekly, Alphamin Resources announced the resumption of production at its Bisie tin mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following the withdrawal of rebel forces from the nearby town of Walikale.
The company stated in its announcement that it is currently processing stockpiled tin ore, with underground mining operations set to resume later this month as more miners have returned to work.
In March, Alphamin suspended production at its Bisie tin mine as rebel groups advanced toward Walikale town. The mine accounts for 6% of global tin supply. Earlier this year, the rebel group "M23 Movement" rapidly approached Walikale after seizing control of Goma (capital of North Kivu province) and Bukavu (capital of South Kivu province).
Earlier this month, the rebel group withdrew from Walikale town after agreeing to negotiations with the government.
The Toronto-based mining company also revealed that it has resumed exports of this critical metal used in semiconductor manufacturing.
Alphamin has lowered its full-year tin production guidance to 17,500 metric tons from the initial target of 20,000 metric tons due to operational disruptions. The company produced 17,000 metric tons of tin in the previous year.
Alphamin disclosed that its Q1 tin output fell to 4,300 metric tons, down 18% from 5,200 metric tons in the previous quarter.
