According to a Reuters report cited by Mining.com, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) announced on Wednesday that the Trump administration has proposed nearly $1 billion in funding to accelerate the development and production of critical minerals and materials in the United States, ranging from power batteries to semiconductors.
The Department of Energy (DoE) intends to provide funding to advance and scale up mining, processing, and manufacturing technologies for critical minerals and materials supply chains.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated, "For too long, the United States has relied on foreign sources for the supply and processing of critical materials that are essential to modern life and national security."
The DoE stated that this initiative was proposed in accordance with President Trump's executive order to expedite energy development by all means necessary.
The Manufacturing & Energy Supply Chains (MESC) office under the DoE plans to provide up to $500 million to expand the processing of critical minerals and materials, as well as battery manufacturing and recycling in the United States.
MESC also intends to provide $135 million to support the domestic supply chain of rare earth elements, including pilot-scale demonstration and commercial-scale refining projects, as well as feasibility studies for extracting these minerals from tailings.
The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) under the DoE also plans to provide $250 million in funding for the construction of facilities, including coal-based infrastructure, with the potential to recover co-associated minerals during their industrial processes.
The remaining funding, including up to $50 million, will support research and development for rare earth magnet supply chain processes—such as the refining and alloying of rare earths—as well as the production of gallium, germanium, and silicon carbide for semiconductors.
